The slow pace of village Life
Our base in Mancor de la Vall is located at the foot of the northern Tramuntana mountains, almost in the middle of the island, a great base for riding in all directions. But it's the village life and ascetic that makes this place special.
For an easy day off the bike, we walk the streets and narrow roads that head into the hills behind the village.
Every thing shuts at 1pm for siesta, re-opening at 5pm.
Dinner is served at 8pm. Too late for us unfortunately, to wait for the local cook to arrive at 7.30 at the local pizzeria, so we cook up a storm and generally in bed by 9.30.
There's no such thing as a garbage bin here. If you can imagine, household green bins outside these properties, would block the streets. So each property has a hook to which they hang their compostable waste.
A very good recycling collection happens almost every day of the week, one day bottles, one day cardboard, another day plastic and three days per week, compostable waste
On those days for bottles for example, they are placed on the front door step, off the road, so its kept clear.
Unfortunately you cannot drink the water here, too many minerals. Its not going to give you a tummy bug, but none of the locals drink the tap water, so its bottled water for cooking n' drinking.
My hair feels like straw, straight and wiry............
No amount of conditioner, makes it feel soft.
Original buildings dated back to 1814 line the tiny streets, beautiful stonework, lemons the size of footballs, olive and carob trees plentiful and you don't have to walk far to hear the bells hanging around the necks of sheep and goats.
High above the town is a Santa Lucia, 13th century Monastery, which is now a retreat. The stations of the cross are found from the town's church, through a tiny narrow rocky goat track, all the way up to the Monastery. We couldn't find Station 4 and 5, but it was a nice discovery.
As was the homes we found, using up every inch of available land. Don't know how the cupboards would work in this place. They would frustrate the hell out of me in that corner!
We came across this well, David had to have a look......
It was tempting...... Comments please. 😆
Love seeing the posts where you're just wandering around & discovering the small things! What a lovely slow little town!
