Historic Calpe

A walk though the historic township of our base, is a must do, on our recovery days and Calpe is no exception. I love their use of colour, their use of tiles, murals on buildings and simply just wandering discovering small snippets of village life.

We came across a local wedding, flowers for the church are delivered by hand, no wedding vehicles in sight, guests in high heels and gorgeous dresses gingerly walking up the stone alley to the church square.

And then, turn another corner and observe how they paint buildings in street's not even a vehicle width. No OHS here, just a high ladder, bucket of paint and a very long stick.

Tarp down on the cobble stones, extension ladder which he straddles, round bucket of which paint slops everywhere and a very long extension pole. His partner was leaning out a window high above this fellow, just getting the job done, yakking away as he leans up towards the top of the roofline.

Stunning artworks adorn buildings throughout the historical town, the streets heading towards the church in the small square are steep, a high point in town.   So they install an elevator.

Traditional Spanish homes generally do not have gardens as such, all available land is used to produce food so ornate plants or house plants are in pots.

Most homes have a pot or two at their front door, washing is hung from drying racks up high above the ground, as generally the old homes do not have a back yard as we know it.

Those with a tree on an outside space, are generally fruit bearing, orange or lemon including in the local community squares, or trees that line the streets in towns we ride through, are a mixture of oranges, lemons, limes or loquats, which are common. (They look like a apricot, without the furry skin and have three dark seeds in them, the size of a peanut) Very nice with cereal.

No lawns to mow here and plenty of large trees for shade.

We enjoyed the warm sunshine and temps of the Costa Blanca coastline.

Next stop, Girona
